Description
The tunnel leading to Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave was dug in 1902 by two Chinese laborers hired by Gustav Schultz. It starts at the Cave Store, Schultz’s original residence, and goes through the sandstone cliffs of La Jolla Cove. Rumor has it that during Prohibition, bootleggers used the tunnel to smuggle alcohol and opium into San Diego. Tours are self-guided and take about 15-20 minutes, involving a descent and climb of 144 stairs. Experience this piece of San Diego history and explore the unique Sunny Jim Cave, accessible only through this tunnel.
